Tropical Cyclone Ampil, which formed in August 2024, was a significant storm that impacted Japan. It originated as a tropical depression south of Japan, intensifying into a typhoon with 10-minute sustained winds of 155 km/h (100 mph) and a central pressure of 950 hPa. While it didn't make landfall in Japan, it brought strong winds and heavy rain, causing evacuations and travel disruptions. Ampil then transitioned into an extratropical cyclone, and its remnants brought gusty winds and high surf in some areas in the midlatitude.
